Img11.png Family Circus

(1 Vs.)
I don't know why you turn me away,
You have nothin' but mean words to say,
And I don't know what made it happen this way,
But I'm leavin' today. (echo day)

You talk behind my back ev'ry night,
Your smile's sweet with honey-but your words are of spite,
You take what's wrong and you make it seem right,
Well, I'm leavin' tonight. (echo night)

(Chor.)
It's a Family Circus that's come to town,
You're the ringmaster and we are your clowns.
Heaven's angels are now hell-bound,
What comes around, goes around.

(2 Vs.)
Family Circus - enter for free,
I shed a tear for humanity.
Can a deaf mind hear or a blind heart see?
We all must drink from your cup of tea.

There's not enough bad in this world to do,
That tears up families - splits them in two.
False words spoken, never one true,
What's happenin' to me and you?

(Chor.)
It's a Family Circus that's come to town,
You're the ringmaster and we are your clowns.
Heaven's angels are now hell-bound,
What comes around, goes around.

(Music solo)

(3 Vs.)
Now years've gone by - that time is past,
You thought you'd keep me there but I'm free at last.
Free to play the role I've been cast,
No questions answered - don't even ask!

(Chor.)
It's a Family Circus that's come to town,
Now I'm the ringmaster and I have my clowns.
Heaven's angels are now hell-bound,
What comes around, goes around.

(Fade)
It's a Family Circus that's come to town. (echo town)

This song is my tribute to child abuse-a menace that has made the phrase "vicious cycle" cliche. I imagine someone like James Young of Styx singing it with his emotion-ripping chords and licks he can drag-kicking and screaming-from his six strings. It is written in Fm and has a very powerful and insistent rhythm, except for the 3rd vs. which is played an octave higher on my piano to give it a faraway, reflective effect.
